Tips on Preventing Diabetes

About 95 percent of diabetes cases are type 2 diabetes, so the tips you will be reading are geared mostly toward preventing type 2 diabetes; but there are also type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is preventable by eating a healthy diet, physical exercise to lose excess weight, quit smoking, lowering your blood cholesterol and lowering your blood pressure.

However, you may get type 2 diabetes from causes other than those mentioned here. Age and family history are unpreventable risk factors for type 2 diabetes. With unpreventable diabetes, the goal of treatment is to prolong life, reduce symptoms and prevent diabetes related diseases such as blindness, heart disease, kidney failure and amputation of limbs.
